ELLIOTT JOHNSTON

The Honourable Elliott Frank Johnston QC has been a friend of the oppressed all his life. He was admitted as a legal practitioner in 1940.After war service he entered practice and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1970 following some political controversy associated with his prior membership of the Communist Party of Australia. As a practitioner Elliott Johnston appeared for the underdog, usually a worker, but often an unpopular criminal defendant. He was very active during the Vietnam War representing those who sought to avoid the draft and those who ran foul of the law in demonstrations. Elliott Johnston became a Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia in June 1983 and retired at the statutory retiring age in February 1988. In retirement he has returned to political interests and is presently an editor of “Australian Options”, a left leaning periodical. The Australian Friends of Palestine Association Inc. is honoured to have him as its patron.
